December’s Selection

December’s book is SuperFreakonomics: Global Cooling, Patriotic Prostitutes, and Why Suicide Bombers Should Buy Life Insurance by by Steven D. Levitt (Author), Stephen J. Dubner (Author)

This book is a continuation of the original Freakonomics book that hit best-seller lists all over the place in 2005 and remained on them for more than two years. The authors write Freakonomics Blog which can be found on NYTimes.com.

November’s Selection

November’s Book is Crush It! by Gary Vaynerchuk

Gary Vaynerchuk is one of the hottest new names on the speaker’s circuit because he’s passionate about what he does and he wants everyone else to be passionate about what they do. If you need a little shot of rejuvination this will be the book for you. To get a little taste of Gary in action, please see theYouTube video of his Web 2.0 Expo.

If one could wear out a YouTube video, I would have worn this one out.

 

October’s Selection

October’s Book will be The Intelligent Investor Revised Edition by Benjamin Graham, updated with new commentary by Jason Zweig. There is a Preface and Appendix by Warren E. Buffett.This is a serious, and large, book.

This is the book that Warren Buffett says is the best book on investing he’s ever read. He’s not the only one. It’s been a top seller for decades and continues. It is old but it is not outdated. In fact it is more relevant today than ever.

October’s Suggested Reading

Why Are We So Clueless about the Stock Market? Learn how to invest your money, how to pick stocks, and how to make money in the stock market by Mariusz Skonieczn

This book just came out September first. The review are excellent! According to the reviews, it starts out very simply then builds.

September’s Selection

September’s Suggested Reading

Rules of Thumb – 52 Truths for Winning at Business Without Losing Yourself by Alan M. Webber.

This is great little book and a relatively new release. It’s the kind of book you want to have on your desk. Just pick it up and read a rule at random – or two or three or five – next time you’re on "hold".

August’s Selection

Subliminal Persuasion – Influence & Marketing Secrets They Don’t Want You to Know is a Dave Lakhani book. Dave grew up in a religious cult. As a result he became interested in persuasion at a very young age. This book deep dives into the recesses of the human mind to shed light on it’s inner workings. The information contained in this book is the information big companies and mass media uses to craft the messages they want us to hear. Understanding that is a very good thing.

Aug’s Suggested Reading

Yes! 50 Scientifically proven Ways to Be Persuasive by Noah J. Goldstein, Steven J. Martin, and Robert B. Cialdini is just what it says. For example, # 20, and you’ll have to read the book for the details, says that asking for a little can go a long way. This book contains 50 little quirks in the human psyche- and it pays, no pun intended, to know every one of them.

July’s Selection

The Definitive Book of Body Language by Barbara Pease and Allan Pease is an International Bestseller. The subtitle, The Hidden Meaning Behind People’s Gestures and Expressions, clearly describes why we want to read it. The book touches on almost everything you can think of on this topic, including some information on international variations.

July’s Suggested Reading

What Every Body Is Saying, An Ex-FBI Agent’s Guide to Speed-Reading People by Joe Navarro offers a solid second viewpoint of this month’s topic. I found it to be an easier read than our primary book for July. It just didn’t cover as much area. The author draws on his 25 years experience with the FBI to illustrate his points. He provides a bit of medical background on the limbic brain early on putting human non-verbal language into context.

June’s Selection

Your day is getting off to a good start. The sun is shining, everything so far is going great then, bam! you run into The Tank, The Sniper, The Grenade, and The Whiner. What to do, what to do . . Dr. Rick Brinkman & Dr. Rick Kirschner are coming to the rescue with Dealing With People You Can’t Stand – How to Bring Out the Best in People at Their Worst. The good Drs have been helping folks since the ’80s but have now updated their work to cover email. Oh, yes, they also cover what to do if we’re the grenade!

June’s Suggested Reading

Since Strangling Isn’t an Option . . Dealing with Difficult People – Common Problems and Uncommon Solutions by Sandra A Crowe, M.A. is another excellent book aimed at improving interpersonal relationships. The approach is different. This book is the more introspective of the two. It contains some excellent stories and cartoons to drive home the author’s points.

Where’s Your WOW? 16 Ways to Make Your Competitors Wish They Were You by Robyn Spizman and Rick Frishman is a book about building a special business. The goal of anyone seriously interested in having a successful business should be to make your customers believe you’re special, and to tell their friends. If you need a bit of help with that, try one or more of the 16 techniques presented in this book.
